Languages, Ideologies and Identities
The languages we choose to deploy (e.g., one’s native language(s), acquired languages, national languages, indigenous languages, “dying” or “revitalized” languages, even corporate or academic speak), how and when we use them, and the forces that influence such choices—these are all key factors that shape our sense of self, community, our relationship to others, and our goals and aspirations. Our use of language is also affected by policies, planning, and public discourse that elevate, stigmatize, or sometimes even erase or extinguish entire languages. In an increasingly intercommunicated world, reflection on our relationship to language is more urgent than ever.
