Knowing the Universe: Ancient Cultures and the Cosmos
Knowledge of the cosmos was not always rocket science. This webinar, hosted by the Alumnae Association and led by Mariam Sabri ’10, considers the history of the cosmos in comparative perspective. It reflects on the historical processes by which cosmic knowledge across Eurasia was created and deliberated from the ancient period to the rise of European colonialism and examines how ancient cultures from the Americas to Afro-Eurasia made sense of the cosmos.

Mariam Sabri is a historian of South Asia and the littoral Indian Ocean world from 1500–2000 CE. Sabri is currently a doctoral candidate in history with a designated emphasis in science and technology studies. Sabri's research specialties traverse the history of science, technology and the environment. Sabri's doctoral dissertation research is supported by the Social Science Research Council and the National Science Foundation. Sabri is also a recent recipient of UC Berkeley's Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor Award. While the dissertation remains their main labor of love, Sabri also pens poetry on the side for solace. Sabri is completing their first anthology Vitriolic Verses.
